Accrington Road Runners – 40th Anniversary Celebrations!

Accrington Road Runners a cornerstone of Hyndburn’s sporting community, is proudly celebrating its 40th anniversary this summer — marking four decades of fitness, friendship and unforgettable memories.
Founded in 1985 by a small group of local enthusiasts seeking a friendly and social way to enjoy running, ARR has blossomed into one of East Lancashire’s most respected amateur athletics clubs. What began as informal meet-ups and casual runs has evolved into a fully structured organisation boasting over 100 active members today. These members range widely in experience – welcoming fun runners, couch-to-5K beginners, dedicated marathoners, and fell-racing veterans alike.
To honour this incredible milestone, the club has organised a special celebratory event that perfectly reflects the spirit of ARR: a 40-mile relay race around Hyndburn, with runners past and present each completing one mile of the route. This symbolic run will weave through Accrington and the surrounding areas, connecting villages, parks and landmarks that have long been part of the club’s training routes.
The route will pass through local towns such as Oswaldtwistle, Great Harwood and Clayton-le-Moors, with each runner handing off a baton as a nod to the continuity and support that defines the club.
A Day of Celebration
The running festivities will culminate in an afternoon gathering at the club’s base, Accrington Cricket Club, where members, friends, and family are invited to continue the celebrations. The event will feature food and refreshments and a display of club memorabilia from the past four decades.
Four Decades of Progress
What started as a handful of runners training informally has grown into a fully structured club offering weekly training sessions, cross-country events, road and fell race participation, and social runs throughout the year.
For many years, ARR’s base was Wilsons Playing Field, where members gathered for training sessions and social runs. However, in 2022, the club made the move to a new home at Accrington Cricket Club.
The club’s Tuesday evening sessions at Accrington Cricket Club remain the backbone of the weekly routine, welcoming runners of all paces and backgrounds. Thursday and weekends see additional meet-ups and longer runs, ensuring that members always have opportunities to stay active and connected.
A Club That Gives Back
The club organises the ARR 10K every October, a popular community race that raises money for local charities. Open to runners of all abilities, the event draws hundreds of participants from across Lancashire.
Join the Celebration
The 40th anniversary event is open to all former members and friends of the club. Whether you laced up in the 1980s or joined during lockdown, the club welcomes you to join the celebrations, share your stories, and reconnect with old running mates.
